Visit to Lavasa City

Lavasa City is a bold experiment on a massive scale to setup a modern integrated urban city with emphasis of life style living in a natural surroundings away from other urban centres. It is being built across 12500 acres and will consist of 4 townships developed over the next twelve years. The first town Dasve will be completed by end of year 2010. The project is lead by (HCC) The Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. The Lavasa city will provide commercial and educational facilities with tie-ups from national and international institutions. It is also being developed as a centre for tourist attractions and family entertainment.

Lavasa City is located near the Varasgoan Lake in the heart of Sahayadri Mountains about 40km from Pune. A very good road connects it to Pune via Pirangut. It took us about two hours to reach Lavasa City from our home in Aundh on 12th February 2010. The road has lots of curves and two Ghats with some rather steep hairpin bends. A road map and a satellite photo below shows the route to Lavasa City from Pune

The Varasgoan Lake is formed by the Varasgoan Dam which supplies water to Pune City. The Dasve Dam shown above is built across a small portion of the lake which juts into the hills forming a captive lake. The Dasve town of the Lavasa City is built around this artificial lake. The Ekant Retreat shown above has rooms to stay and a nice restaurant which overlooks the Dasve Dam. There is a nice residential Fortune Hotel in the town centre.

You can see the current development of the Dasve Town in the Lavasa City Photo Album.

The development of Lavasa City envisages building a Civil and Social Infrastructure to support the townships. This includes building a self contained area for the workforce of Lavasa having its own town centre, apartment buildings, service functions and civic amenities. They will also have low cost housing at low rentals.

You can get details of this project, ambitious in scope and vision, on their website at Lavasa City Project.

All this will take many years to develop and settle down. How well it succeeds will depend upon what happens in the rest of the country.

We can only wish them well !!
